Discrimination claims can be expensive

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) reports that private and public employers paid a record of almost $422 million in penalties last year as a result of employment discrimination charges. That included $356.6 million in payments to employees who claimed discrimination and another $65.3 million to settle litigation filed by the EEOC.

The number of complaints is increasing

The number of employment discrimination claims in the private sector increased to 89,385 in 2015, up slightly from the previous year, the federal agency reported. Discrimination claims had decreased by several thousand in 2014, even as employer penalties increased.

Small businesses are often the target

More than half of EPL charges are brought against smaller businesses and although 75 percent of claims are found to be groundless, they can be expensive to defend. HSB's EPLI program can help small business owners avoid a complaint and respond when one is made.
