Employers pay record penalties for discrimination claims
HSB offers liability coverage to help protect small businesses
Workplace discrimination claims are on the rise and federal agencies have imposed record fines on employers. What are your business customers doing to help prevent employment practices complaints? Will their insurance coverage help them defend a claim?
HSB's EPLI program includes risk management
HSB's Portfolio Employment Practices Liability Insurance (EPLI) program can protect small businesses with 100 employees or less. We provide insurance for employment liability damages and defense costs for claims of discrimination, wrongful termination, or sexual harassment. And we include a loss prevention website and services that can help prevent a claim.

"The small business owner gets value-added services with our EPL program," said Todd Cincotta, HSB vice president for specialty liability. "They're getting not only the coverage, but a Web-based risk management tool as well as a toll-free advice line. And those two risk management tools are of great value."
In this video, he provides more information about the coverage and services included in our program.
Discrimination claims can be expensive
Your clients need HSB's EPLI coverage.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) reports that private and public employers paid a record of almost $422 million in penalties last year as a result of employment discrimination charges. That included $356.6 million in payments to employees who claimed discrimination and another $65.3 million to settle litigation filed by the EEOC.
The number of complaints is increasing
The number of employment discrimination claims in the private sector increased to 89,385 in 2015, up slightly from the previous year, the federal agency reported. Discrimination claims had decreased by several thousand in 2014, even as employer penalties increased.
Small businesses are often the target
More than half of EPL charges are brought against smaller businesses and although 75 percent of claims are found to be groundless, they can be expensive to defend. HSB's EPLI program can help small business owners avoid a complaint and respond when one is made.
