HSB flying drones for inspections and loss prevention
High-tech tool yields data for engineering and insurance operations
HSB has received federal permission to fly drones commercially, giving our engineers, inspectors and claim specialists another high-tech tool to identify equipment exposures, prevent and adjust losses, and help our customers improve energy efficiency.
Rooftops and other hard-to-reach spots
The Federal Aviation Administration authorized HSB's operation of small unmanned aerial systems (UAS). HSB personnel, with a pilot's license, will fly the craft in hard-to-reach spots, such as above steep rooftops or sprawling solar power farms.
Drones are a powerful tool
"Improving our inspections and insurance operations is very important to us," said Jay Jablonski, HSB vice president for HSB Professional Loss Control. "When equipped with various sensor technologies, such as visual and infrared cameras, drones give our engineers and insurance staff a powerful tool to analyze risks and system performance."
Energy audits and equipment inspections
In addition to using the drones for visual inspection of equipment and properties, HSB will use the drones to assist in energy audits and equipment condition inspections.
Claims and underwriting operations
HSB will use drones to support multiple operations, both in underwriting and claims processes, and provide similar support to client insurance companies and other insurance partners.
New uses of drones and data
We are also researching new uses and types of drones, new and different sensors and ways to improve data analytics of the information collected during drone flights.
