HSB offers tips on preventing cold-weather losses
Cold weather can be costly to your clients. In addition to higher energy bills, winter storms and freezing temperatures can lead to expensive equipment breakdowns.
Share the information with your customers
HSB's engineers have prepared cold-weather tips to help maintain heating systems and prevent equipment losses. You can share this information and other fact sheets on severe weather and disaster preparedness with your customers.
Protect pipes from freezing
Any disruption of electrical power during cold weather is a freeze hazard. Your clients should protect pipes and equipment and have plans in place to provide backup power or have access to portable heating units that do not require electricity.
Be prepared for ice and snow
Ice and snow can cause severe damage to equipment and property during a storm, and there is also the risk of flooding when temperatures rise. Check snow removal equipment in advance or have contracts in place with reliable snow removal contractors.
Power down carefully
Severe weather can disrupt the supply of power and lead to surges in voltage that can damage equipment. Turn off unnecessary equipment when appropriate, and when it's time to restart everything, do it one piece at a time.
