"Home Grown" Power Creates Equipment Risks in Schools, Hospitals and Municipal Buildings
Small Power Generation Equipment is Intensive, Gets Hard Use, is Prone to Breakdowns

With rising energy costs, tight budgets and public support for "green" policies and practices, more municipalities, hospitals and schools are generating part, or all of their own power.

GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS
These small generation plants offer savings on electricity and heat, and can help reduce pollution and carbon emissions, but they are comprised of equipment that is subject to breakdowns that could cost thousands of dollars.

Click here for examples of typical small power generation losses.

WHAT CAN GO WRONG?
The direct cost of repairs is only part of the exposure. When a small generating plant experiences an equipment breakdown, there may be an additional expense to replace the lost heat and electricity. Here’s a sample of the types of equipment at risk:

  • Boilers operate at high temperatures and pressures, so are susceptible to breakdown from cracking, tube ruptures and overheating.

  • Turbines and Generators convert energy to electricity. Whether steam, combustion, water, or wind turbines, they run at high speeds that can damage rotors, blades, bearings, gears and other parts.

  • Reciprocating Engines, fueled by diesel, natural gas, or gasoline, have been used for years at power plants. Parts such as rods and crankshafts break down.

  • Transformers are the heart of an electrical system. They can break down due to insulation deterioration, loose connections and other causes.

  • Electrical Distribution Systems are interconnected. Loose connections, line surges and a host of other causes can result in electrical damage that spreads to other parts of the system.

HSB KNOWS POWER EQUIPMENT
HSB understands the equipment used to generate power. Our equipment breakdown program not only pays for covered repairs and related damage, but offers your customers ways to minimize the loss or prevent breakdowns.

YOUR CUSTOMERS GET BETTER COVERAGE
In addition, we can provide coverage for lost business income, extra expense, extended period of restoration, service interruption, and more. HSB includes jurisdictional inspections of boilers and pressure vessels as required by law.
