Ice Machinery Breakdown is Risky Business for Emergency Supplier
An equipment loss can be costly and risk the reputation of a business, but when machinery in an ice plant broke down public safety also was an issue. HSB worked with the customer to repair the damage as quickly as possible.
ON THIN ICE
The $179,055 loss was caused by improper design of the ice cube raking system. Production was severely curtailed at the plant, which was contracted by the U.S. government to produce ice for victims in the event of a calamity.
OUT OF CONTROL
The rake assembly was installed in the new plant only a month before. Some time overnight, when the plant was unoccupied, automated controls activated the machinery. A safety switch that might have prevented the damage was not yet connected.
BUMP IN THE NIGHT
The rake struck the upper support beams in the plant, causing tension on the cable and pulley system until the cables snapped and the assembly crashed down. The rake, beams, bin walls, pulleys and motors were damaged.
DISASTER COULD STRIKE
Although there was no current emergency, the insured was expected to produce ice in very large quantities on short notice. The insured was worried that a hurricane or other disaster could strike while the equipment was down.
HSB HELPS SPEED UP REPAIRS
Within days of the initial claim investigation, HSB issued a partial payment for more than $50,000 so work could begin to get the plant back into full production. HSB paid more than $125,000 more to complete the repairs.
