Cleaner, Greener, Bigger Equipment Risks for Dry Cleaners and Laundries
Costs, Customer Expectations, Regulations Lead To New Methods and Exposures

The busy dry cleaner was on the spot. Clean clothes were piling up but couldn't be ironed because a power surge shorted out the computer controls for three pressing machines. Instead, the clothes were sent out to other cleaners in a $44,332 insured loss.

IRON IT OUT
The dry cleaner relied on automation. Now customers wanted their clothes back. HSB paid $8,813 to outsource the ironing of the laundry and another $35,520 to repair a cuff press and install a new combination sleeve and shirt press.

NEW EXPOSURES
Laundries and dry cleaners are adding and upgrading equipment to improve efficiency, cut costs and protect the environment. They are responding to the changing expectations of customers and new government regulations.

HSB KEEPS UP
With the use of sensitive electronics and new equipment such as refrigeration in dry cleaning machines designed to recycle chemicals and reduce emissions, laundries and dry cleaners need insurance protection that keeps up with evolving risks.

BOILERS BREAK DOWN
Boilers are still the heart of a cleaning operation, providing hot water and process steam. In addition to equipment breakdown insurance, HSB provides jurisdictional inspections of boilers and pressure vessels where required by law.

OTHER EQUIPMENT DOES, TOO
Other equipment common to dry cleaners and laundries includes shirt units, conveyers, folders, air compressors, electronic cash registers and point-of-sale systems. Electrical systems, fans, air conditioning and other basic building equipment also are at risk.

IN-HOUSE OPERATIONS
The equipment used in dry cleaners and commercial laundries can be found in other locations, including the in-house laundry operations of hotels and motels, hospitals, nursing homes and other institutions.
