"Virtual Hunting" Accident Results in Real Loss

Changing technology continues to add new equipment exposures for
retailers and many other businesses. Merchants are taking advantage of
computers, programmable electronics and other electrical equipment to
stand out from the competition - sometimes in places you might not
expect.
DIGITAL TARGETS
A sporting goods store is one example. You may associate
hunting with woods and fields - tracking wild animals in the outdoors.
But the shop also offered a bow-hunting video simulator to help attract
customers and boost sales. The outfitter suffered a real equipment loss
when the digital simulator broke down following a power outage.
BACK IN THE GAME
The accident occurred when electricity was restored and a utility
voltage surge destroyed the unit's proprietary interface card. The card
could not be repaired and no replacement part was available. HSB paid
$35,550 under the equipment breakdown policy so a new hunting simulator
could be installed.
